About Project SEED

The Midland ACS Project SEED has been opening doors for economically diverse high school students since 1978, hosting over 100 students in the local academic and industrial laboratories. Over the years, the Midland Local Section has placed between 2-15 students every summer in real research environments, thanks to the generous support of local enterprises and the section itself.

Project SEED is a paid summer internship program administered by the American Chemical Society, designed to provide students from low-income households with hands-on research experiences. Students work in real laboratories alongside professional scientists who serve as mentors, gaining exposure to STEM careers and building skills that prepares them for college and beyond.

The program was established on April 4, 1968, originally named “Summer Experiences for the Economically Disadvantaged.” Over the past 50+ years, Project SEED has served more than 11,000 students across 40 U.S states and territories, offering 8–10-week research internships and virtual summer camps focused on college readiness, lab preparedness, and professional development.

Currently Midland ACS places 12-14 students each summer in real research environments by partnering with local universitas including Central Michigan University (CMU), Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), and Michigan State University St. Andrews (MSU St Andrews).
